In the KDE desktop (which is 'standard' for ML8.1 and ML8.2) you have:
K (in the same place as 'start' in Win98 :) ) -> multimedia -> sound ->
soundmixer. If that doesn't work your card is not properly set up.
Mandrake Control Centre is the first place to configure hardware I think. HTH,
