If the card has been physically changed kudzu should be run before this - with any luck it'll remove details of the old card and substitute details of the new one _without_ having to dive into the swamp of xf86config. Then, on booting to the GUI as a normal user, the Mandrake Control Centre can be used to change depth, resolution and so on. (I changed from a Soundblaster Live! to onboard sound and kudzu sorted everything out just nicely).
