I NOW OFFICIALLY LOVE MICRO$OFT.
[little rant coming up]
Having paid a princely sum for an official copy of Publisher 97 (part
of computer bundle of Office 97), I expected to be able to open
Publisher 98 documents.
I couldn't (and that's where the problem lies), wrong file version.
Okay, maybe they changed the file format. That was my theory until the other
day i checked the open file dialog, and saw a perfect "File Preview".
In other words, publisher97 can easily read the file format, but
Micro$oft added in some file info to stop you from doing so.

That's nice to know, but StarOffice 6 went commercial, i think.
OpenOffice, well we'll have to wait and see what Sun does.
