I don't know that this wil help,
I had a similar problem, in that a cd would initially read, but I could not 
umount the drive, always busy, or remove the cd, and the activity led would 
stay on. I had to reboot to get the CD out of the drive.

I had two drives on the machine, so for a while I just used the cd r/w as it 
worked ok. Then for some reason I changed out the cdrom drive and all was OK.
strange...

Another issue I have with two drives is that when installing software under 
software-manager, I will start out with the first cd in scd0 and if a diff cd 
is required, it will open the 2nd drive scd1, not the first one.
