Thanks for the reply, smb mount. 

In the end I got really technical. I ripped the hard drive out,
transferred it to the other PC, copied the file over, then put the drive
back. I'll gloss over the problem of not booting due to the now missing
hard drive and the quick lesson on editing fstab!!
