Hi All

Would appreciate suggestions.

I have 2 Mandrake 10.1 boxes connected in a network.

Box 1, called Big_Nate is an IBM laptop at 192.168.1.4
Box 2, called Reality_Check is an MSI motherboard desktop at 192.168.1.2

I can connect from Big_Nate to Reality_Check by SSH and fish in Konqueror.
I can connect from Reality_Check to Big_Nate by SSH and fish in Konqueror.
This shows that both SSH and fish are working.

I can NOT connect form Big_Nate to Reality_Check by fish in KBear.
I can NOT connect from Reality_Check to Big_Nate by fish in KBear.

I can connect form either Big_Nate or Reality_Check to any ftp addressed
that was installed by Mandrake such as Free BSD which is the first ftp
site in the KBear address book. This shows that KBear is working at some
level.

User name is set to correct user name and passwors are set to correct
password as uses to login by SSH and fish in Konqueror. Anonymous Login
is unchecked. I have KBear set for protocal fish and set to port 22 in
both cases. I have set language in advanced settings to Western European
8859-1 in both cases. ALL boxes in Advanced settings are unchecked.

I have set the host name in Big_Nate to 192.168.1.2 so that I may connect
to Reality_Check whose address is 192.168.1.2.
I have set the host name in Reality_Check to 192.168.1.4 so that I may
connect to Big_Nate whose address is 192.168.1.4.

KBears opens window just as it does with ftp transfer from know BSD site
and then displays connecting, initiating protocal but then stops. NO
CONNECTION IS EVER MADE.

Final point KBear was not installed with system but was added by normal
neans of adding programs from Mandrake 10.1 DVD disk after system was
running.

Thanks
Frank

Dumb question - can you connect if you use the IP address instead of the host name?

NO

I can only connect to Big_Nate or Reality_Check by SSH or fish by using the numerical address of 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.4. In fact I can only ping either computer from the other by using numbers.

I can not connect to Big_Nate or Reality_Check by using the name of Big_Nate or Reality_Check. In fact I can not ping either Reality_Check or Big_Nate by using names.

Thanks Frank

IP address is the numerical address...

Now, in order to have a chance of sloving your problem, we will need to some information. Could you please post the contents of:

/etc/hosts
/etc/host.conf
/etc/resolv.conf

If the files are not the same on both machines, then post both versions, and tell us what version goes with each machine.
