That's just not so. As I was trying to point out before, when a joke or jibe is accompanied by an emoticon, it's quite clear. > in private emails with very active and longstanding > list members i learned that these "jokes"/flamewars > made them sick to the point of wanting to cry and leave, > and they fear renewed outbreaks like the ones at the beginning > of the second war against iraq in 2003. They worry about something that happened two years ago? If anything, the two years without a similar outbreak is proof that we're better at moving discussions to the OT when necessary. > to play with nazi jokes on a newbie support list > is not helpful except to the freaks enjoying > to spit from the window on passers-by. I believe that it directly nurtures a supportive community. > exactly, and i said that too on these very lists. > but that was before i felt the fearful attempts > to silence me I think you're overstating this. The only person who would have any power to threaten you would be a moderator whose threats would be limited to kicking you off the list. But there is no person (as you well know) so nobody here has any direct power over you, and you have not been threatened otherwise--that I know of, anyway. Besides which, you stick up for yourself well enough. > ... when i spoke out against massive verbal abuse today. You have to admit you did a bit more than that. After admonishing to curb the lashings (which was fine) you ended your message doing quite the opposite by expressing purely political views for pure politic's sake (and no comedic value). That's what Anne was getting at--without excusing anybody else for anything else. Others went too far--I'm sure Mr. Geek would say he did. Perhaps others. Perhaps me. It's all academic now. > i will move on as soon as possible. that won't be too soon as > good distributions are still moving slowly. I agree. > currently, without some guiding hands, many good hearts > have not enough protection to really shine here. Give the human heart a bit more credit for being strong and resilient. We've all taken licks from each other, but then gotten over it and continued to stand united as lovers of Linux. Well I think we've bludgeoned this poor horse to a bloody, painful death. Off to the glue factory for him! Peace, Miark
