I just though I'd mention that there are other 'anomolies'. For
example, today kmail reported it didnt have write access to the .kmail
folders and crashed afterwards.
Also, when shutting down, instead of the nice blue screen and progress
bar, I had the blue screen, but with yellow all around the edges. Then
the shutdown proceedure switched to verbose mode, but part of the
"press Esc key for verbose" text hadn't been erased.
I just said I'd mention them incase the info was useful.
Thanks,

Definitly a lot of strange things going on. I will have to think about
them. But one thing that will help is a small change to /etc/hosts.
127.0.0.1 loneswan.localdomain localhost
This should fix the GUI login problem. It should also speed up a few
things. I don't know if it will help with the other thing. You may want
to take a good look at your log files to see what other problems they
are reporting.

I made the change to /etc/hosts, but I havent noticed a difference. The
login problem is the same. I'd love to wipe the computer and put 10.2 on,
but it took me so long to get my wireless NIC working that I forget how I
did it :)

I think I know what caused it. I was looking at my graphics card in harddrake,
and I cllicked options. It asked me if I wanted to run X.org at boot. I just
closed the window without saying yes or no (thinking that would preserve the
original setting).
I ran it again and said yes. I dont have the problem anymore. (Although the
GTK warning is still displayed at the console).
Thanks for your help Mikkel,
Jarlath
I am glad you have it working. Definitly strange stuff.
