I would like to try another mirror. The question is how do I go about
this? I don't have the foggiest idea on how to use or what any of the
command lines are for. If it doesn't have a icon I'm lost.

Owen, please don't top-post. Some people get very upset. Read
http://mandriva.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/MandrakeMailingListEtiquette for
more information.

OK - open Mandrake Control Center > Software Management > Media Manager. Find
the source that is not working for you and uncheck it. Then go to
easyurpmi.zarb.org and follow the instructions on that page for getting a
replacement source.

I used easyurpmi for several mirror sites without sucess.
I'm now wondering if the problem resides in my software because the failures seem to have one central theme.  having to do with the file "main". It doesn't seem to exist on my machine.
Using the search feature I started with the file "var" I progressed through /var/lib/urpmi/.  There didn't seem to be anything within this folder. At least there wasn't any subfolders.
Below is the final portion of the failed installation.

'ftp://mirrors.secsup.org/linux/mandrake/Mandrakelinux/devl/10.1/i586/media/main/
media_info/hdlist.cv
retrieving failed: curl: (9) couldn't cd to dev1
retrieval of source hd list (or synthesis) failed
no hdlist file found for medium "main'
examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi//synthesis.hdlist.main.cz]
problem reading synthesis file of medium "main"
unable to update medium "main"
