That's what I have - 160kbps more or less d/l speed to Europe and such - no really slow sessions, unless there's a problem with the hops between me and the other side. 128k bit upload is a bit slow, but one tends to pay much more for faster upload -- and upload is usually faster on a cable modem, but overall I agree that DSL is better than cable. It's certainly not a "wimpy phone line". One would think that there are some good satellite providers that would make for comparable service between satellite and DSL (or cable0 but then again latency is a factor. I can't for instance go directly from here to nl - I have to go to orbit, than back down, then back to orbit, then over to nl, for instance, right? Or is it just the one intervening hop is a big one (i.e, watch out for that first step, it's a doozy). > It would seem to me, an I've wondered as much for some time, > that satellite would be the best way to expand service to the most I'm more inclined for Wi-Fi or similar technology. There have been some inroads into antenna broadcast (similar but not exactly the same as Wi- Fi). IIRC Sprint was doing it here locally, and you could get a good (at that time) connection if you had a direct line of sight to the San Jose foothills. I enver really seriously checked it out, though. If memory serves, there was also Mindspring(?) offering high (well, higher than modem) bandwidth services in a similar fashion; I remember one of their reps informally demonstrating it on the local city bus. Also, a couple of years ago there was a locality in South Dakota experimenting with this type of technology. That's pretty "rural" for my book. > it would be so. Sat. Speaking of which, I just ditched Comcast for Dish Network this week, and what a difference. I get so many more channels + can DVR and it is cheaper than the cable was by about $8 per month. The only drawback is the local channels - due to how my apt is situated, the rep said I wouldn't get any usable signal with the second dish, and I need the second dish for some locals. BTW, Dish Network is based in Colorado, and I'm wondering why they haven't gotten into satellite internet yet. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ David E.
