hello Paul

I was wondering something. I went out and got a lot of distros to try them all out and see which one I would like best. I did all the biggies, but all of them were buggy, crashed, froze or lost data. I

data loss ? how did this happen ? you are the second to mention this today.

finally settled on Madrakelinux 10.1 (bought the powerpack book with DVD) although it was pretty unstable until I was able to get my computer online with the new card modem I told you all about yesterday so that I could fetch the bug fixes and other updates. Once I had done that, the distro was really quite stable and I love it because it is most like Windows (easy migration) and highly configurable, intuitive, and comes with a ton of software. And there lies my question....

I have just gotten a free copy of Mandrake 2005 Limited Edition (from the good guys at http://www.budgetlinuxcds.com ) because a 10.1 disc I ordered from them did not work. So, it was a replacement and upgrade for free, and I have installed it and am using it now. It is incredibly stable and I am surprized. They really got it right this time, and it has been a pleasure to use the past two or three days. In fact, it is so great, I don't see how anyone could possibly want to use any other distro (that comment alone would start a war were I not on the Mandrake channel right now), and I in fact am staying with Mandriva for good.

great that your hardware currently works well with Mandriva.

Problem is, the Limited Edition DVD didn't come with nearly the amount of software my 10.1 Powerpack came with, and a friend told me that it is because all the programs that come with the 2005 edition have been tested and are stable with Madrake, and I am therefore wondering if you can install programs from the 10.1 Powerpack onto this 2005 edition and have them work ok.

So, my question is, "My 2005 Edition is stable and working fine now, but I would like more software. Is it acceptable to fetch more software from my 10.1 Powerpack DVD and if so, will they be stable or affect the OS?"

i would not do that, try adding the sources you get from http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ is software you are looking for missing from there ?

kind regards philippe

Hi Philippe,

I meant that the other distros had the problems. In fact, one of them crashed entirely after I installed it and was configuring my panel! LOL! That was the new Ubuntu 5.04 or whatever it was. People like that thing? Yes, all hardware is working correctly, and all I have left now is to load another program that will allow me to use a printer - my old Lexmark Z11. The software I am missing that I would like is Wine, Crossover Office, I would like my Kstars planetarium back and then I could use my good old Firestarter firewall (by the way, is the stock firewall with Mandrake really effective?). There are a few more on my 10.1 disc, but again I am afraid to screw up this rock solid install of 2005 Limited Edition.

One other question, is it necessary to run a second firewall & antivirus program on Mandrake? I am so used to it with Windows, do you need it really with Linux? Is spyware a problem with Linux and are there programs for Linux to prevent and remove spyware?

Best wishes,

Paul
