I use escputil, "escputil -r /dev/usb/lp0 -u -i" for instance to show you your ink levels on a usb epson printer. I fould mtink used to freeze my computer often on MDK 10.1 Try also "man escputil" after you have installed it.
After a bit of bother with printer not printing I uninstalled Mtink, and used escputils - works great - thanks. Looked at 'man' and good utility. Had to reboot to get printer going again ...
