[newbie] Fresh install on hda - data gone on hdb

I did a fresh install of 10.1 over 9.2 on my hda disk. I elected to wipe 
out  'hda' for the Mandrake re-install. I assumed what was on the 'hdb' 
disk would not be affected, but I see now that the files are gone. I 
used 'hdb' only for samba data, it was mounted as /var/images. No big 
deal, I just want to understand what happened here.

I did the install onto hda, then ran Mandrake Control Center 
partitioning utility and mounted hdb as /var/images. But I saw no files 
in /var/images.

Am I doing something wrong in configuring this, or did the data get 
wiped out due to my fresh install? Thanks.
