Couldn't something be done about that by a combination of sudo and group?

Hmm - I wonder if that is relevant to my problem? I have burned,
occasionally, at 24x, although I generally burn slower. For these ISOs,
though, in k3b I tried setting at 12x, 9x and 4x, and every time except the
8x I got a message saying that my drive could not burn at that speed. The
speed was then changed to 8x. (I can't remember what the top speed of the
drive is for CDs, but I think it's 48x. When configuring k3b I set it to max
24x for safety.)
