I think it depends on the hardware. I wish mine worked that way. If I try to 
use the "eject" command, I get a permissions error. If I hit the eject button 
on the drive, it pops the CD out without unmounting it, leaving the system in 
an inconsistent state, and making the CD drive unusable until the next 
reboot. Even putting the same CD right back in, and trying to do an unmount 
then, doesn't do any good. So I always have to remember to do an unmount 
before removing a CD.

That's all for data CDs of course. Audio CDs are not mounted, they are read 
through a different process entirely. If you try to mount or unmount one, 
you'll just get an error.
