I now have LE2005 running correctly with both KDE and Gnome, thanks to Margot pointing me in the right direction. (She "showed me the way to get gnome!")
For the record, I did a fresh installation of LE, installing both KDE and Gnome. Once again, there was no Gnome in the list of sessions. So, in MCC Installation Manager, I deselected the DVD as a source, leaving just the download sources. Then, in Install Software, I selected the Gnome meta package, which also selected about 15 other packages to be downloaded and installed. After they were all installed, LE worked correctly.
