I know for a fact that Firefox was part of the 2005 distro, but included in updates. I bet Thunderbird was too. If you are configured for main, updates, and contrib, you can usually get the stuff you want pretty easily. If you want to maintain a totally current machine, you need to deal with it yourself, as Mandrake can be pretty slow with updates, especially when a new Beta version is out.
