OK, so the plan is to move the old KDE directory, and I'll check out the kernel thing with Knoppix. The modem should not be a problem -- it's an ancient Zoom ISA modem that Just Works (TM). Likewise, I expect that the mouse will also be OK -- both her system and mine use the same model of Logitech optical USB/PS2 wheel mouses and mine is working just fine.
