As a Windows developer, I would add the comment that the 9x operating systems
are a major PITA, even compared to XP. They are incredable more unstable, and
mix 16 bit with 32 bit code to make a major mess. I was on the NT beta program
back in 1992, and since then, even in the old days when I was a "windows guru",
would not even consider 9x for a machine that I had to regularly use!!

I hope this isn't too OT and that I am not prolonging the thread.

I was interested to read all the things Kaj and Stephen listed to make XP a
*little* more secure, and would like to ask a question.

Very occasionally I have to use Windows, and XP was installed when I bought
the computer. I have several hard drives in trays, so no multiple-booting.
This means that, for most of the time, the XP hard drive is about eight feet
away from the computer! However, I hate XP and think that my old 98SE is a
better version.

I have heard that 98SE is, in fact, more secure than XP, so am wondering
whether to format the hard drive and go back to 98SE. Can you confirm this?
I know that 98SE is almost at the end of being supported, but it does all I
want in that particular OS.

Many thanks for any advice.

Keith
