Now, as for the IP addresses, whaddya think? Go static? Rosemary would
need a static IP for the Mandriva box anyway, and this would save her a
bit of CPU and Ram for not having to run
I'd sugest the usual 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 for the Mandriva box and
192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0 for the Mepis box with that one using a
gateway of 192.168.1.1.
Rosemary will have to use the DNS info from her ISP for this to work.

agreed about static IPs in the 192.168.x.x ranges...
but the mandriva box can act as the gateway thru the ADSL modem, so the
switch will be working, and working to share the internet connection,
but just not as the gateway device... nes pa?

Considering that Rosemary has a standard dial-up connection, she can't
use the ADSL modem at all. At least not until she subscribes for a
DSL/ADSL internet service, than is. Until then an ADSL modem would
simply act as an attractive paperweight.
But you're bang on about the Mandriva box being a gateway device, just
that it will have to use her standard hardware modem instead of an ADSL
modem. And, of course she can use the switch, by connecting it to the
network interace on the Mandriva box, and then connect the switch to the
Mepis box via standard network cable.
