Okay, this might be well known but I had never seen any postingsd or allusions
to it and I thought it was kinda cool.
You can run the service script from within Mandriva using the -R option and it
will automatically restart all services that are currently running on the
box. On a server, this is actually kind of neat to do on a regular basis
because it is not as traumatic as a full reboot but you still can clear out
temporary files, swap space, and it helps with any possible memory leaks that
might have been sucking up your resources.
On my server which has just under 1 GB of RAM, I routinely run with 640M free
of memory after the initial start. After 2-3 days, I am usually down to
about 512M of free memory with maybe 8-10 MB of swap used. After
running /sbin/service -R, which takes about 2 minutes to complete, I am back
up to 674M of free memory with 0 swap used.
Another benefit, if you add new services or daemons, you don't have to keep
track of any of them, the service command will restart everything that is
currently running, a one shot deal.
Thought that I would post this just in case anyone else finds it useful.
As to swap, you can also get to -0- used by doin (as root),
swapoff -a followed by
swapon -a
Tho in reality, the MM in recent kernels makes this rarely, if
ever needed. If it is required, somethin's fsck'd up ;)
