Well, I don't have any direct experence, but you may want to double
check the monitor settings in your config. You may be using ether too
high a frequency, or just one the monitor doesn't like. I am more used
to monitors going blank (newer monitors) or letting out the "magic
smoke" (older monitors) when driven at too high a frequency, but it is
worth looking into.

The monitor settings are those that I used in 10.1 - and that I use
in windowsXP. SO I don't think it's that.
I don't suppose the nv driver in xorg is 'known' to be problematic?
As root,
'urpmi monitor-edid' if it isn't already installed, and then...
'monitor-edid'
The output will end in the preferred resolution and modeline for
your particular monitor, read directly from the monitor's firmware.
The is the one you should have in xorg.conf and the one you should
choose when running 'XFdrake' (or from mcc).
I use the nv driver on 2006.0, and have for several MDV versions
for years with a GeF4. It is not the problem.

However.. I'm not sure about that... my monitor is widescreen - so
surely I want something mor eline 1280x768 ?

I note that my conf file has +Vsync and the monitor-edid gave back a
-Vsync should I guess that would make a big difference?
I dunno, my 19" LCD returns '+' for both. I vaguely remember that
has to do with interlacing. I'm not sure what you mean by 'widescreen'
either. Mine is termed as such, but the screen is just 1.25:1 compared
to a crt's 1.33:1. FWIW, here's my monitor-edid. Note screen size an

The 2005LE fresh install should'a tried to use 'monitor-get-edid'
(which produces binary output) to config xorg when a flat screen monitor
is detected. You might try 'monitor-probe-using-X nv' and the results of
'monitor-get-edid' piped to a file, and send those to Pixel as
instructed in the results of the probe command (which includes his email
address).
I believe I'd try running XFdrak an selecting 1024x768 first tho.
While your montior might report it's capable at 1280x1024, 1024x768 is
more normal for a 17". Monitors might be able to be 'overdriven' with
Windoze, but it's not a good idea with Linux. Much as I believe that's
what Mikkel was also advising.
My Samsung will run fine at 1600x1200, but that's just too much
for a 19". Monitor vendors have long overstated their specs, on the
assumption the hardware will be used with Win$ux, rather than a real OS.

Sorry to have taken ages, but only just got back home to once more poke
my computer.
I should probably emphasize that back in mdk 10.1 prior to xorg, this
same hardware setup worked fine. So I don't think it is an issue of
trying to force it to work with the wrong settings.
The modeline from my old xf84conf file that worked is:
Modeline "1280x768" 80 1280 1328 1440 1688 768 771 777 806 -hsync +vsync
the modeline that monitor-edid gives is:
ModeLine "1280x1024" 135 1280 1296 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 -hsync

I've tried them both, and neither work for me.
