Thanks Mikkel,
I actually got the modem to dial a couple of times, but once disconnected
because pppd wouldn't come in, the line was dropped or I turned off the
modem, then wouldn't dial again.
So I have been using windows for months. This on an Acer 1355LC lappy, because
of power restriction............ solar panels batteries etc.. Googled and
read for months, and got nowhere close to connecting in Mandrake
Anyway, I tried Debian Sarge that was sent to me some weeks ago, by a friend,
and I could connect with pon. I was rapt, and so am using Debian at the
moment. Finds the USB to RS232 cable, and modem hanging on the end of it, on
any USB port, and runs like butter off a hot fry pan. So using Linux again
for the Internet. Pretty neat.
But thanks for that advice, I might even try that in Debian to use kppp. I may
get back to Mandrake again in the future. Who knows?
Be well,
Charlie
It sounds good to me. I didn't run 10.0 myself - I went from 9.2 to
10.1. But I do remember reading about some problems with USB devices.
Hotplug and udev, working together, are susposed to take care of that
type of problem. But it isn't something I can test - I don't have a USB
to serial converter, and my externel modem is 300 miles away, being used
by one of my sisters. (I have DSL here.) In any case, as long as you
have a way to make it work in Linux, that is the important thing.
If you deside to try 10.2, and it doesn't work automaticly, let me know,
and I can help you write the udev rule. It will probably be something like:
KERNEL="ttyUSB0", SYMLINK="modem"
but you may want to fine tune it so you only get the symlink when
plugging in the one converter.

Heck I think the solar powered setup is close enough related that many
folks on this list would like to hear about it, Charlie...
