I did as you say, and it made no difference. There is something really
odd in the report of iwconfig. See below.
The other posibility is that we are changing the wrong config file. But
I do not think this is the case. In any case, when you get a chance, run
iwconfig on the machine whith the NIC plugged in, and the interface
trying to connect, and let us know what is says. It should show the
wireless status, and if it is trying to use an encription key or not.
(iwconfig is the wireless compliment to ifconfig.)
I give you the output of iwconfig:
---------------------------
# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
wlan0 802.11b/g NIC ESSID:""
Mode:Managed Frequency=2.442GHz Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00
Bit Rate:11Mb/s
Retry:off RTS thr=2432 B Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality:8/92 Signal level:60/154 Noise level:161/154
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
If I run iwconfig while the interface is trying to connect, I get: "no
wireless extensions" for wlan0. What I find odd is the entry:
"Encryption key:off" in wlan0. It detects the key off, and I wonder how
that might happen. I hope you have an idea of what may be wrong.
Teilhard.
This is usualy because of the type in the ifcfg-wlan file. But this
usualy shows up in the log as well. One way that may let you see the
messages is to run, as root:
ifdown wlan0
ifup wlan0
This is extraordinary, Mikkel. Knowing wlan0 was down, I issued the command:
"ifup wlan0". the system tried to get an IP address and there were errors I
couldn't decipher. But then, I issued: "ifdown wlan0", and then: "ifup
wlan0", and there was success. I am in the net already. Some more bread to
think about, but at least I have encryption and a way to get up my
interface. Thanks so much.
This will bring down the interface, and then bring it back up. Because
you are doing it from the shell, instead of it being done for you, you
should see the error messages.
The other thing you can try is to give the iwconfig commands one at a
time, and see what is wrong. You could try running"
iwconfig essid "<access point essid>"
iwconfig key <your encription key, in HEX>
iwconfig key restricted
iwconfig commit
If I issue the command "iwconfig essid", I get: "essid no such device".
If I type "iwconfig essid <my access point essid>", I get: "unrecognized
wireless request <my access point essid>. And the same with the rest of
instructions you give me.
If that works, then send me your ifcfg-wlan0 file, and your wireless key
in hex, and I will check your configuration, and send you any
corrections off the list. (I assume you don't want to share the key on
the list...)
I am gladly sending you my configuration file via email.
If it doesn't work, post any error messages, and maybe we can figure it
out.
Well, the problem is "almost" solved now. I greatly appreciate all the help
you have given me.
Teilhard.
