Mikkel, I did the MTU' s o.k. but how do I do the mu's ?
As for the initialization strings. I have tried the USER strings for the
appropriate modem using strings for software flow control (XON/XOFF)
without any change
My theory generated through ignorance.
I have tried both versions 10'1 and LE2005 using a variety of external
modems with various configurations. The results have always ended the
same. The sad light pulsates with a rhythm from fast to slow this is
repetitive then the rd light starts to blink. Packets are sent in spurts
of several seconds. The cs light starts blinking then everything stops
for three minutes or so then another spurt of packets. This is repeated
several times then all transmission ceases.
I don't think it is the software or the modems . This leaves the
computer. Being ignorant of the BIOS setup and the motherboard I
therefore suspect them via the process of elimination.
Any ideas?

Thanks guys but tweaking the MTU didn't work. I tried default in
addition to 128, 296, 1280, 256, 178, 138. Any idea where I can
find/edit the modem command strings?
The "Kppp Statistics" are as follow at time of failure:
bytes in 1250149 bytes out 161509
packets in 1083 packets out 1118
vjcomp in 0 vjcomp out 0
vjunc in 1020 vjunc out 0
vjerr 0 nonvj 1118

I now have a working external Sportster. Well.......kind of working.
When I start to update packages the kppp statistics graph shows a
normal
flow of packages (2.9kps). But after 10-15 minutes the package
transmission gets intermittent, with periods of no transmission
getting
longer each time until transmissions stop completely. At times there
will be a single spike of 1kps.
I've tried various mirror sites but the problem remains. The modem
doesn't disconnect, it just sits there.with a incomplete package.
Any suggestions besides telling me to go back to Windows?

It sounds like you may need to tweek the mtu and mru settings. I am
not
sure exactly where to do this in Kppp, but I am sure it can be
done. You
might try a settign of 576 and see if that helps...

do you know what modem init strings are?
you will need t find what init string your modem uses, and get that
string into KPPP or whatever you dial with. it is a string of
commands sent to the modem before the dial string to configure it.
you ma find this info in the booklet that came with your modem, or
you may be able to search the USR website with the model of your
modem to get that info

first, can this page help you,,,
http://www.usr.com/support/5686e/5686e-ug/six.html
next, are you having KPPP log (graph?) your sesion?(stop, you might be
filling up where ever the log is held)
is the question "wher in KPPP do I put my init strings? in modem setup
but I do not have kpp installed on this box.
now if the queston is where to find the information,,,
the commands about 1/3 to 1/2 way down the page that start with a "&"
are the init commands, and you can/should customize them to suit,
although most general external serail modems will work with the
default KPPP tries, I know some (mine) USR model 5686 need to have
AT&F1E0Q0V1&C1&D2S0=0
this setings I "gleaned" from the windows .inf file
on the bottom of your modem there will be a model number on a little
sticker, th
