There is nothing in the rules that say you can not have more then one config file for the same device, and it in not unheard of for the GUI to put the wrong device in the config file. On my laptop, I used to have several config files for the Ethernet NIC, before I changed to using net-profiles. I would bring up the correct interface for the network I was connected to. (2 different static IP configurations, as well as a DHCP configuration.)
