Normaly, when you log out, all your processes are stopped, so
downloading would stop. One way around this is to start the downloads
from a VT instead of X. I like using wget for this. It will also let you
restart interupted downloads, and other nice features.

You can also use nohup to start programs that are not killed when you
log out...
