[newbie] using mailto tags with thunderbird

Firefox was not processing mailto tags.  I found this link http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_Integrate_Thunderbird_and_Firefox which helped me get the mailto working, sort of.  If thunderbird is closed, the mailto works fine.  If thunderbird is open (which I always do), I get a popup asking me to pick a profile and since I only have the default I get an error that the profile is in use.  Does anyone know a way around this, or do I need to create a dummy profile?
