Check the /etc/inittab => if the "default" is set to 3, then it will just
take
you to a console login. If it's set to 5, that will give you a GUI login.
That being said, if you find that it's 3 and change it to 5 and reboot, you
should get a GDM (Graphical Display Manager).
I checked it with the old Vim (after some Googling for instructions on
that) and it was at 5 so I rebooted but same problem. So I reinstalled,
with some online research and attention to the video specs and, voila, it
works.
I personally prefer to use
runlevel 3 so that I'm able to troubleshoot X issues and also play with other
window managers/desktops.
Since I now know how to mess with the inittab, I'll probably switch to
runlevel 3 just for coolness and psyching out any ignorant newbies that
might try to boot in my presence.
Thanks for all the helpful responses, I'm recording the info cave-man style
(with ancient ink writing device), for complete retention.
What editor do you all recommend? I used to have a dual boot system on my
desktop with RH9 and I recall using some editor in Gnome that seemed to be
more user friendly than Vim.
Thanks again,
Matt
