I deleted the download I had and downloaded again, and it did the same
thing - installed to open office. I followed instructions first time
from speculation.org and second time from sun. I am at a loss to know
why it is doing this, and how I can change it.

Try a "locate" for "j2re(version)" instead of "java". This should tell
you where your java machine lives. Then you can follow the instructions
for making the symbolic link.
