Bryan's already given a couple of options, but there is a third if you're happy editing files from the command line. Once you get to the error message, it should give you the option of logging in as root in order to fix the 'error', do so, then use your favourite editor to edit /etc/fstab to remove all entries for entries for /dev/hdb, e.g.: vim-enhanced /etc/fstab Works for me everytime I have hassles with my external drive.
