There are a few possibilities here:
1. Your CD burner is rated to perform at some maximum speed. The CD's are
rated to perform at some (not necessarily the same) maximum speed. If either
maximum speed is exceeded, you will get a bad burn.
2. Your downloaded files may be corrupted. You should download the md5sum list
file from the mirror where you downloaded the .iso files, and do a check.
The md5sum list file you need is
'Mandriva-Linux-2005-Limited-Edition-Download-CD.i586.md5'
Make sure the .iso image files are in the same directory with the md5sum file.
Open a terminal window.
Switch to the directory containing the .iso files.
Run the following command:
md5sum -c ./Mandriva-Linux-2005-Limited-Edition-Download-CD.i586.md5
md5sum will take some time to check the files in the list. If there are no
problems each .iso file name will be printed out in the terminal window with
'ok' after it. If there are problems with a file, md5sum will print an error
message.
3. Your browser may not properly handle downloading .iso files. Some browsers
default to downloading files as text files. Image files need to be downloaded
as binary files. I use gftp (it's a linux app) here to download image files,
although any ftp client will do. If you are downloading in Windows, you can
try smartftp. I have not used it in a lot of years, but it worked well for me
back when I used Windows regularly.
