The fortune files are stored in /usr/share/games/fortunes. The -e in
my script means "quoted from man fortune:
The -e option says to consider all files equal; thus
fortune -e funny not-funny
is equivalent to
fortune 50% funny 50% not-funny

Righto - in an attempt to combine the two sets of instructions I did

Then did this: into a new file called kronus, as per Joesnildo
*/2 * * * * /home/rosemary/sig > /home/rosemary/fortsig
after making an empty file which I called fortsig.
I also did "crontab kronus"

Put the sig file and the fortsig in different folders. I did it and the
whole thing worked.
To see if cron took the job, issue the command
$ crontab -l
