Glad that you got things going.

As to nicks, IRC is like that. If the nick is in use, you're out of luck. 

One nice thing about Freenode and the other networks that support it, is that 
nicks can be registered, so that they can't be used except by you. Other's 
use of the nick is restricted. They do expire after a while, so if you aren't 
on, they can be released. If someone has the nick you want, you're pretty 
much out of luck, other than to watch and see if the registration expires. 
The other thing to remember about IRC nicks is that people will be typing the 
nick a lot, so if you choose something easier to type, you'll make those 
answering you a lot happier.

And also, this registration is on a per network basis, so it isn't for every 
IRC network, just the one you registered on. There are a lot of different IRC 
networks to explore, some are really large like EFnet and Undernet, others 
are medium to small in size. They all have their different "personalities". 

Have fun exploring. And don't get discouraged about the reading. IRC is a 
great new world to explore. In no time it'll all make complete sense.
