Thanks, but no luck. I did everything as root as you suggested. The mouse stuff in xorg.conf was always correct when starting in runlevel 3 when I started xserver mouse was inactive. It doesn't matter what type of mouse I have configured, it doesn't work until I change the mouse type in harddrake.

Hi Folks,

I have a problem with my mouse. I have a Genius Netscroll + eye Optical
mouse and am having trouble getting mandrake to recognize it when it
first starts up.

The mouse was recognized by the installation program and was correctly
selected during install. After a reboot the mouse doesn't work, I am
able to log on and run harddrake, where I can configure the mouse. By
default it always starts with "Universal - Any PS/2 and USB mice"
selected, I am able to arrow up to PS/2, where I select Standard, the
mouse test window appears and the mouse starts working. I then cancel
and select the Generic PS/2 wheel mouse. Everything works nicely until
the next boot when I have to go through this process again.

The same thing happens if I plug an optical Microsoft usb mouse. It's no
big deal in itself, as the whole process takes less than 30 seconds, but
firstly it shouldn't be happening and secondly I'll never get the rest
of the family to ditch XP while this problem exists.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Jeff.

I hope you're doing this as "root" and not just as a normal user, right?

Meanwhile, what you CAN try to do is to find out what changes are made to the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file after you get a working mouse. Clip that code snippet and save it. Change your booting to runlevel 3 instead of runlevel 5. After you get logged in, firstly try running "startx" as root => see if the mouse is flaked out again. If not, you should be able to logoff and login as yerself and have a working mouse. If it flakes out, then edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file manually, make sure the device settings for the mouse are the same as in your code snippet. Save, fire up X again and see if that affects your mouse.
