I have written a very detailed how-to on my LFD forum to describe how-to successfully upgrade KDE.  Below is the link and you can use my SoS repository to do the upgrade as well.  We have Gnome-2.10, KDE-3.4.2 and have already built Gnome-2.12 rpms for LE2005. Very good advice which I will follow.

I'm not desperate for 3.4, and I guess that 2006 will have a lot of other
"improvements". Tried the "lite" beta version some weeks ago, and although a
lot was missing, (not enough bandwidth remaining that month to download many
of the missing bits), it looked very nice.
