After a disk or partition is formatted with a particular file system - say for

That being the case, I'll "assume" you've formatted the partition/drive with 
either ext3 or ReiserFS and upon reboot, the system "thinks" that it is a FAT 
file system and therefore mounts it wherever it mounts it - and presumably 
mounts it as a FAT file system - is that more correct to state?

If that IS, in fact, the case, then there is the matter of editing 
the /etc/fstab and making sure that the drive/partition is mounted CORRECTLY 
and the file system identified correctly...
