Xfce does their packages a little bit different. Not like kde where it has kdebase or anything like that. To get Xfce up and running you need several packages such as xfce-session and others. Urpmi'ing xfce-session should get you a lot of xfce and should get you enough to get it running.
When you get back try doing:
urpmi xfce-session xfwm xfce4-artwork xfce-utils xfce-panel xfce-systray
See what that does for ya. Also, do you have online sources setup for Main, Contrib, and Updates already as well as the SoS-Xfce online source ? If not, you should go to http://seerofsouls.com/addmedia and add them, and then do a urpmi --auto-select to get your system fully updated.

Cliff, thank you for your reply. I had no previous install of Xfce on my current Mandriva 2005LE system. There are no Xfce packages installed.
Why is there no base xfce-4.2.2 rpm package?
I will be away from my computer for several hours and won't be able to reply till perhaps this evening.
Best regards.
