Linux is about choice.  For those with old hardware, Joe's comments are 
applicable.  If you have modern hardware there's nothing at all wrong with 
it, and making the appearance more comfortable to you is a very personal 
matter.  KDE is very configurable, which is why it's so popular.  You 
don't have to use all the memory/processor hogs if you don't want to.
