I have been using trays for over two years now, without any problems. 
Like you, I much prefer keeping the different OS's completely 
separate rather than multi-booting.

One tray's connector/ribbon cable has definitely gone faulty, and 
another's is suspicious. (too much changing around of the hard drives 
inside them!) I have a couple of old UDMA66/100 trays not used, so 
that is why I asked about mixing 66/100 and 133.

Also, for the past three or four days,  the computer has started doing 
peculiar things (which I won't bore the list with). I have a mixture 
of hard drives and was wondering if that could suddenly be having any 
bearing on the problem.

It will be a week or more before I can get to my nearest computer 
shop, so I wanted an interim solution.
