It's concerning interrupt handling, I believe.  Try googling for "apic 
lapic".  noapic is, of course, "no apic".

Since Christopher is talking of an older computer, there are other options 
that he may need to try, such as acpi=off (or =on) as well.  It's a bit 
trial and error with these things, but once you know what your motherboard 
is happy with, you just set that in lilo and it's there forever.

Of course, I'm assuming that he has tried things like "startx".  If it's as 
simple as that it's just a matter of editing a startup file to init5 
instead of init3.
