I didn't explain the situation very well. There is one USB printer, and a

Anyway there is a wizard, which ask for among other things, an ip address.
I entered the ip address for the router, but I'm not sure if that was what
the wizard was asking for or not. Anyway at this point it doesn’t want to

Apparently the cups server is not functioning. When I try to install
printer I get a message that an error occurred while retrieving the list of
available backends, and that the connection to the cups server failed.
I did download the webmin program, but was then not able to connect to the

I have noticed that on the laptop, which is also connected to the same

Through out the printer installation window has frozen.
Appreciate any suggestions.

You can try pointing you WEB browser to http://localhost:631 and check
printer status. If you can not connect, then try running
"service cups restart" to make sure CUPS is running. You are probably
going to have to remove and re-install the print server connection.
Exactly how you configure the print server depends on the print server.
If you are using a lpd-type connection, then it should be the IP address
of the router, and the print spool name. If it shares as a Windows
printer, then you would use the Windows networking share name. This may
be covered in your router manual.
One thing I have found is that you will get a fairly long timeout delay
if you have an lpd-type printer defined wrong, because it will try and
get the printer status. Because the print server does not respond to the
request for status when the configuration is wrong, you have to wait for
the request to time out. You can also get extra delays when you use a
host name instead of an IP address. If the name is not a valid host
name, the lookup has to time out.
As far as seeing the Linux machine in your network places, that is
because Samba is running on the Linux machine, and it seperate from the
printer setup. (Though Samba will share the configured printers once you
have CUPS working correctly.)
