We have a HIGH speed connection, very near T1 connection speeds. The problem
then becomes how fast the server on the other end can deliver and how fast
the routers between you and the server are. I think about the fastest actual
download speed I've seen on my computer is about 230kbs with most running in
the 190kbs range. That's about a 700M download in just under an hour.

Mind you, I'm NOT complaining. I'm absolutely LOVING it. Before we found
this service the best we could get out here was dial-up at 28.8 on a GOOD
day.

Just be aware that you will probably never see an actual 100mbs download.
That's the possible. Not the real deal.

Well, I was wondering about the same thing, Billie. So now I've done some asking around. Right now we have a 4Mb/sec DSL via copper line (phone company) and all my (huge) downloads (cooker, OOo_2, etc.) come in at 426KB/sec. Multiply that with 8 and you get 3408 Kb/sec = 3,4 Mb/sec. Then someone told me that there is some overhead, meaning that the actual factor should really be around 10, so in reality my download is 4Mb/sec, which equals the promised speed.

I asked the power company if 100Mb/sec isn't a bit optimistic what with all the servers, routers, replicators etc..having to catch up ? - The techie replied that the fiber connection went directly to something called "the DIX" located at the nearby Air Force base and thus directly to the Internet Backbone. That should ensure an almost unlimited speed, so 100 Mb/sec was realistic.

I don't know. But I doubt that small, obscure and privately run servers out there can deliver that speed. Never mind, the price tag is competitive (at lest here), and I don't like monopolies like phone companies, so I signed up. What nags me is the TV-channels : completely useless (to me).

So now I'm waiting for a brand new laser-> ethernet "modem".
