Actually, my understanding is that i586 means that a Pentium or equivalent 
(e.g. a newer AMD chip, such as Athlon) is required. In other words, it won't 
work on a 386 or 486. I've seen rpms marked i386, which means they'll work on 
anything 386 or newer.
