Most Exchange servers use IMAP, not POP for mail retrieval. And, how can you be using an Exchange server that is not configured for SMTP? How would the exchange server talk to other mail servers if not through smtp. How do external mail servers talk to the exchange server if not through smtp? Why would you want to talk to any server that can't talk to other servers? Without smtp, it is an island.
