Hello,
First I used FreeBSD as my OS, because some friend of mine used it. Now
I wanted to give Linux also a try. Someone I know adviced me as starting
Linux user Mandriva linux.
Now I'm using it for some time. But I dislike the fact that there is no
good documentation on the mandriva site
(http://www1.mandrivalinux.com/en-us/).
The only thing that there is explained is that you need to click on
"configure your computer" but if you want more then the standard things
there is no explanation. Where can I find some good documentation like
FreeBSD has?
Why doens't the doumentation say where to find packages on the internet
except on the cd. I needed to ask a friend of mine about that. He said:
go to "urpmmi.notix.net". Are there any more places to get more packages?
Is there also a good site like www.freebsd.org/ports where you also can
search on description of packages?
Linux is disimilar to FreeBSD as there are competing distributions.
Mandriva (a commercial company) doesn't want to aid SuSE or RedHat (both
commercial companies).
http://stommel.tamu.edu/~baum/linux-meta.html
describes itself as a front-end to the Linux Software Encyclopaedia &
"other meta-resources".
Places to get more packages:
use easy urpmi to set up urpmi for contrib, PLF (free & non-free):
http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/
'Linux' is one of google's special searches, so if you go to:
http://www.google.com/linux
and enter your search terms the searches will be linux-related. e.g.
entering 'amateur radio' gives the site at: http://radio.linux.org.au/
with maybe 300 ham radio applications listed.
Also check:
http://freshmeat.net/browse/18/
http://rpm.pbone.net/
Documentation: plenty about. Go to 'The Linux Documentation Project' at:
http://www.tldp.org/
Also try:
RUTE (Rute Users' Tutorial & Exposition) at:
