The problem is if you bought a laptop with the great graphics card you can't do anything about it.
This is a bit of a problem, hopefully they will make their drivers available for tweaking.

ATI is not recommended for use with Linux, as the company is actively hostile
to Linux. Better to stick with nVidia if you can (I know this isn't always
possible) - they still refuse to open up their code, but at least they
provide good closed source Linux drivers.
