Thanks people

I originally tried to send this on 6th October, but gmane/sympa are
conspiring against me. Her's another try:

Harddrake doesn't appear to show the camera at all. It has always been
plugged directly to the computer (no hub). I don't have any usb1 ports
on the laptop.

A little more info. I bought a card reader yesterday and it will mount
as /dev/sda1, so there is no absolute requirement for direct access to
the camera, but I would like to enable it for flexibility if possible.

Seems there is a problem with the configuration of the chip in the
camera itself.

With camera plugged in /proc/scsi/scsi is empty.

Thanks

Russell
