What does the boot splash screen look like (crap, starry-eyed penguin -2005, more elegant penguin 2006)? Does the backgound have the word 'FREE' across it (2006)? What version kernel are you running? (type 'uname -r' in a terminal, 2.6.12-12 2006, earlier 2005). Are you running KDE or Gnome - which version are they? If you've installed 2005 and upgraded using cooker, there *may* be several difficulties.
