Hello,

I wonder if someone could help me with a LAN browsing problem?

I have Mandriva 2006 on a PC connected to an adsl router/firewall. Also connected to the router is a WinXP machine. Being a bit paranoid I also have the software firewall running on the Mandriva machine. Using MCC, firewall if I tick the Everything (no firewall) box I can see the other PC using smb://home with no problem. If I remove the tick in everything and tick Windows file sharing (smb), smb browsing fails with error message could not connect to host for smb://home.

What port do I need to allow through the firewall to allow this?

Google suggests port 139 but haven't I allowed that by ticking the Windows file sharing (smb) option?

Thanks for any suggestions/comments.

netbios-ns 137/tcp # NETBIOS Name Service
netbios-ns 137/udp
netbios-dgm 138/tcp # NETBIOS Datagram Service
netbios-dgm 138/udp
netbios-ssn 139/tcp # NETBIOS session service
netbios-ssn 139/udp

139 is the file sharing. 137 lets you brows the network. I don't use MCC to set up the firewall, so I am not sure what the checkbox does.

This applies to external firewalls as well as the internal iptables stuff. Just be warned that if you allow these ports to be open to the outside world your machine will be announcing itself to all and sundry, so make sure you are aware of the status of all your network ports.

Good luck
